Gale,
I just wanted to send a little supportive nod your way. It sounds like you've hit a rough spot in your experiment; and I wanted to let you know that I think what you're doing is unique in its authenticity.
I grew up in a meat-eating home and am raising my kids vegetarian. It takes some time to figure out how to cook, when the model was always meat, veggies (preferably of the frozen variety) and starch!
Whatever happens come April, I know that living as a vegetarian for a month will have had an impact on you, and, I'm guessing, your family.
I haven't tried protein powder, but why not? (Or, just have a heaping serving of cottage cheese--PACKED with protein!)

Good luck, Gale! I have been a vegetarian for a long time and I would be happy to send any stand-by recipes your way if you're looking for some new things to try. And I really enjoyed both The Omnivore's Dilemma and the Kingsolver book that Nicki recommended. I'll be interested to see what you think of Eating Animals.

Kudos to you! I have thought about this a bit, too, with all the writing going on about food. I was sitting at Panera, eating a salad with chicken called antibiotic-free, and I thought, is this what I want to put into my body? (Because if you have to say it's antibiotic-free, I have to get a little freaked out.) We don't eat a lot of meat in my house, but our weakness is chicken and turkey meatballs. Still, I wonder about becoming a complete vegetarian. The only thing is, I've never been a huge fan of veggies, until I married my husband who knew how to cook. I think I might just eat a sh**load of bread instead, which is why I'm keeping the mantra, "all in moderation."

Cheers! (You can still have wine, fortunately.)
